My Summer Mantel

WOW!! Summer mantels…already?  It seriously feels like just a couple months ago that David had bought me this faux mantel just in time for me to join Layla’s Christmas Mantel party and now I’ve “summer’d” it up for her Summer Mantel Party!

For my summer mantel I was inspired by a few wonderful bloggers out there!!  First up, the gorgeous Layla with the Lettered Cottage.  Yes, the same Layla that is hosting the party.  When she first announced the party, she showed pictures of her summer mantel from last year!  WOW!  I fell IN LOVE!!  She wrapped some of her candles and jars in rope.  I did something close but used hemp.

These are before…

and after…

Hot glue and candles don’t mix, so you just tack the hemp or rope to your candle.

Looks great eh?

I LOVE my new sign!!  And YES, that is toilet paper roll art!!!  I was inspired by the lovely Chris of Just a Girl.  She made an AMAZING piece of Toilet Paper Roll Art for her bedroom.

For mine I used the top of Alie’s toy box.  I cut a piece of poster board to fit in the white space.  That way I could use the top again later, OR change out the design for the next season!!

Her toy box is overflowing so it was never really used!

I glued all my cut pieces on to the board to make flowers.  Then I spray painted it all white, except one flower that would be green.  The green flower I hand painted.

Then I glued the green flower into place.  NOW, Chris actually warned everyone that these little suckers soak up the spray paint!  She recommended using primer before.  Did I listen, of course not!  So now that I KNOW I am passing the message on to y’all too. Use. PRIMER. First!
See what I mean?

But, from a distance it’s not so bad!!
After cutting and gluing and painting, I decided the light wood trim needed to be brown so I painted it.

What do you think??  I am really happy with how it came out.  I do think that next time I will get the flat paint instead of glossy.

The next bit of inspiration came from lovely Wendy of The Shabby Nest.  Her Summer Mantel is simple and elegant.  She had a jar filled with shells and I just love it.  I had an empty jar and so I did the same!

So sweet, right?

To make the banner, I was inspired by the lovely Myra of  My Blessed Life.  She made a super sweet Spring Banner and even posted a tutorial.

FIRST!  Feed your princess breakfast and then get started!!!

I would like to show that THIS is what happens when you run out of gluesticks. HEY, it worked!
Then, while having “tea” in Alie’s room, I traced and cut the summer letters.

It came out great didn’t it??

And this is my Summer Mantel…..

Don’t you love it??  I really do!

I’ve seriously had so much fun with this faux mantel!  AND it was only $24.99 at Target!! WHO doesn’t LOVE Target, right?
This was my Christmas Mantel

My Valentine’s Day Mantel

And my Spring Mantel

See!!  If you don’t have a mantel, I HIGHLY recommended getting a faux mantel!!

I’m linking up my summer mantel to Layla’s Summer Mantel Party!!  Are your summer mantels ready??  If they are get them linked up!!!  The party is going on for a few more days so you have time!!  I hope to see you there! 🙂

I made The Pioneer Woman’s Pig Cake

I wish I had a better picture for y’all but this is all I have.  I took it to send to my sister in a text, showing her that I did INDEED make the The Pioneer Woman’s Pig Cake

Oh my goodness, y’all!  This is the cake of all cakes!  It’s the QUEEN of Cakeland!  It is so delicious it defies description!  It’s PERFECT for Spring/Summer time!  Heck, it’s perfect for ANY time!!

For my birthday my sister Kari made me a PW Pig Cake.  So sweet right?  She actually used sugar free pudding, mandarin oranges and pineapples in light syrup and it was JUST AS DELICIOUS!!!

Yep, I’m 38!! But it’s OK, I still act like I’m 22!!

See, I told y’all this cake is so amazing that it is still amazing even low-cal!!!

This is the recipe from The Pioneer Woman’s website.  Along with the direct link underneath.

FOR THE CAKE:

1 box (18.25 Oz. Box) Yellow Cake Mix

1 stick Margarine (softened)

1 can (14 Oz. Can) Mandarin Oranges, Drained, 1/2 Cup Juice Reserved

4 whole Eggs

1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract

FOR THE TOPPING:

1 package (4 Oz. Box) Vanilla Instant Pudding Mix

1 can (20 Oz. Can) Crushed Pineapple, Juice Reserved

½ cups Powdered Sugar

4 ounces, fluid Frozen Whipped Topping (such As Cool Whip)

Extra Mandarin Orange Slices, For Garnish

    Preparation Instructions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. For the cake, combine cake mix, margarine, 1/2 cup juice from the mandarin oranges, eggs, and vanilla. Beat for four minutes on medium-high. Add drained oranges and beat again until pieces are broken up and small. Pour batter into greased and floured 9 x 13 inch baking pan and bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until golden brown and set. Remove from oven and cool completely. If desired, turn out cake onto a large platter.
Once cake is cool, blend juice from drained pineapples with the vanilla pudding mix. Add powdered sugar and mix, then mix in whipped topping. Stir in drained pineapple. Spread on cooled cake and refrigerate several hours.
To serve, cut cake into squares and top each square with a mandarin orange slice.
I am linking this deliciousness up to the Home May’d Recipe Party with Rhoda of Southern Hospitality.  Get your recipes ready.  I hope to see you there!
Now, I mentioned that my sister made me the PW Pig Cake for my birthday.  I thought I would share a few pictures of my birthday.

I still feel new to AZ and after living all my life in TX, I’m still not over how amazing mountains really are.  I love them.  Out here some are just beautifully colored rock, some are covered in cacti and some are covered with all kinds of interesting desert plants.  We love to go hiking.  We love it so much, Alie asks to go hiking nearly everyday.

For my birthday my family planned a little picnic at North Mountain. This is where we picnicked.
My hubby, my Alie, my sister Kari and her bf Charlie, my brother Jaddy, his wife Julie and their son Jayden all planned this for me! Hubby made the MOST DELICIOUS turkey burgers.  Everyone brought all kinds of yummy stuff to munch on. And Kari made the DELICIOUS cake!

Alie and Jayden had so much fun just playing in the sand.
Check out Alie’s hiking boots!! Aren’t they the coolest!?!

After we ate we all went on a nice hike.  The weather was PERFECT!!  We took the easy trail for the kiddos.  I have to tell y’all, Alie can handle those moderate trails pretty well in her super cool green hiking boots!

I HAD to share this one with y’all.  That is my brother!! HA!!
It was such a great day!!  My sis sent me home with the rest of the cake.  She even packed up some extra mandarin orange pieces for me!!  This was my piece for my late night b-day treat!!
I really hope you’ll try this recipe!! It’s WONDERFUL!!!!
Thanks so much for stopping by!!

    The Sentimental Wind Dancer

If you’ve been following me for some time, then you know I love to create things out of my sweet Alie Marie’s old blankets and clothes, ya know, the ones that are just too stained to donate.  It’s just so much sweeter, right?
Some old posts of baby blanket and baby clothes craftiness!
    Baby Blanket Art
    Fabric Rosette Tutorial
    Rosette Spring Wreath

At World Market one night I saw this adorable ribbon wind dancer.  I knew I wanted to make one.  Then, I thought I could do this with strips of Alie’s out grown clothes and old blankets.

I cut my strips and then made a circle from a piece of cardboard.  I attached monofilament cord to the circle.

Then I tied the strips to the circle.

This is what it looks like hanging up.

Pretty cute eh?  Here check out what it looks like on the patio!

What do you think??  We, Alie and I LOVE it!!  It’s perfect for Spring or Summer!

NOW, for the lessons learned in making this: First, you’ll want to reenforce your cardboard circle or use strong plastic or wire for the circle.  My cardboard circle is already bowing in places.
Second, after striving for PERFECTLY cut strips of fabric, I decided to just cut them thinking I would trim them up after.  Then realizing I liked the unevenness of them.  I think it gives it a “Shabby Chic” kinda look.

I really want to make a few more now for Alie’s room.  I think they would look great hanging from her ceiling.

The FABULOUS Kate of Centsational Girl is hosting the Outdoor Ideas Party portion of the Home May’d Link Party Series.  I am linking this beauty up.  Get your Outdoor Ideas ready!  I hope to see you there!

There is a TON of awesomeness up for grabs!!

    Fun with Spray Paint

Do you remember a while back when I told y’all I finally got to spray paint?  I mentioned it in the post about Alie’s Cute Animal Art

Well, this is the other stuff I painted!

This is before.  I found both those frames and the letter A from the Goodwill. The color of the spray paint I used is called Ballet Slipper Pink, how sweet is that!?

The green a had a little rose on it.  I removed it before I spray painted it. I actually painted the rose part with some nail polish so that I matched the pink a little better.  It was a very faded orange-red.

One of the frames I added some gingham rosettes and turned it into a sweet Valentine’s Day frame, the other is the Animal Art and then her new letter a.

What do you think?? I have to tell y’all spray painting is FUN!! I can’t wait to finish the other projects I have done.  Now, if you checked out my 1st Framed Wreath then you ALSO got to see my 1st BOTCHED spray painting project too!!

    My frame went from this…

    to this!!!!
