Hubby’s Shark Cake

Do you remember me mentioning making a shark cake for my hubby on his birthday?  Well, this is it!!!

I was going for an ocean look with the frosting and with the actual color of the cake.

The shark I made with the same recipe you use for cake pops.  It’s really just crumbled up cake (the tops cut off when you even them out) and frosting.  The fins the birthday boy himself made for me from cut pieces of cardboard.

This is before the foamy water was added.

And all finished…

The inside was shades of blue too.  I had intended for it to go from a deep dark ocean blue to the pretty turquoise ocean blue on top.  BUT, it didn’t quite work out that way.  Still, everyone including the hubby LOVED the cake.

What do y’all think???

Thanks for stopping by!

Make Your Own Monogram Art

I wanted to share with y’all one of the things I made my sister for her birthday.  It was really simple to make too.  I had seen so many great wine cork monograms and art pieces and KNEW right away I had to do something with wine corks for her.
I used the same method I did for the Spring Sign I made.

DIY Spring Sign

Then just glued paper onto the box and glued a few little decorative pieces. Then I glued a few wine corks onto it, creating the letter K.

What do you think?!  She loved it!!  I love it too, BUT I think I would love it more if it was in a shadow-box frame.  Ya think?
Thanks for stopping by!!

Guest Blogger Meg with A Little Knick Knack

Today I have for y’all my awesome friend Megan with A Little Knick Knack.  She is super creative, supportive and all things awesome!!!  I’m so excited for y’all to meet her!

Hey everyone! I’m so excited to be here at Ami’s blog today. Isn’t she great? I love her sense of style and whimsy. She is a wonderful inspiration to me!

My name is Meg and I live over at A Little Knick Knack. I’ve been blogging for just over a year and love it!  I host many great giveaways and do some fun reviews, so come by and check things out!

A Little Knick Knack

I have a lot of wood. Anything that I can do to wood, I’ll do. I love to paint, stain, glaze, hammer, distress, sand…the possibilities are endless. I had so much fun making these birdhouses….

…and these fun little initial blocks…

And this yellow chair…

I’ve been trying my hand at sewing lately. I hosted a basic sewing series with another fabulous blog friend–Tina from Twinkle Toes, and we did a tutorial on how to make these lovely pillowcases….

Today I’d like to show you how I made a really simple sign for my kitchen. First, I took an old board I had gotten in the “as-is” bin at Home Depot. They sell fragments of wood for $.50 a board. CHEAP!I took this board and primed it white.

And then painted it with a bright, bright, BRIGHT red. Since I was going to paint another color over this, I went with the sloppy method.

Let your base color dry for awhile, so there’s no smearing. Once you’re satisfied, paint a nice topcoat over it. I chose a light blue.

Now, go ahead and print your letters in the size and font you want for your sign.

Now, here is my poor-man’s method for getting letters on your wood. Take your signs and turn them over. Rub the back liberally with pencil. Turn them back over and trace the outside of the words onto your sign. The lead will rub off on your board leaving you a nice outline to paint.

I like to use acrylic paint pens to fill in my words. So much easier for me and my unsteady hand!

I took a piece of sand paper (150 grit) and sanded over the entire board. It sanded down nicely, but I still needed a little more antiquing. I got my walnut stain and wet paper towel.

I brushed on a layer of walnut and then quickly wiped it off with the paper towel. It gave me the effect I was going for.

And there’s your “vintage” farm sign! Enjoy!

I hope you can join my Thursday link party, Everything but the Kitchen Sink! It’s open all weekend and we have such a fun time! Come check it out!A Little Knick KnackAlso, to all the Etsy/shop owners out there, I’m having a giveaway until August 5 for250 CUSTOMIZED labels! Come on over and enter!

Thanks so much, Megan!  Isn’t she great!?!  My kitchen could use cool fresh eggs sign!!  And I LOVE those birdhouses!  Please go show Meg some love!!  And I hope to see YOU at her Thursday link party!
