For my moms birthday I really wanted to make her a special cake. I missed the last two birthday as I was living in Phoenix at the time. I’ve seen so many GORGEOUS cakes on pinterest and in the blogsphere. Including my own! Which really put a big smile on my face to see how many times it’s been pinned!! Which cake you ask?? Well here, let me show you!!
But first I wanted to make an ombre style cake in purple which is my moms favorite color.
For the batter I just used a white cake mix. Someday I will step outside of the box and make something like this…

| White Almond Sour Cream Cake from Our Daily Obsessions |
But for now I just used a mix. For colors I used 6 drops of red food coloring and 3 drops of blue for the lightest. 10 red and 5 blue, then 16 red and 8 blue, the darkest was 30 red and 15 blue. I also used 6 red and 3 blue for the white icing.
The layers were thin so I baked them according to the cupcake directions on the box. That actually worked out perfect.
After they were baked I layered them and iced them in between.
Then I got to work on the roses.
But then, (insert these three dramatic chords, A minor, C# minor, and E minor here!) this started to happen!!
The icing started to melt and ooze. There were holes everywhere too! IF you pay attention to the I Am Baker Tutorial, she tells you how to cover up those holes. I also learned through a little research that it’s always best to make your own frosting. Adding a bunch of watery food coloring to store bought frosting makes it runny. Also if you add little bits of powered sugar it will thicken up your frosting.
Good thing from far away you really don’t notice the imperfections!!
And now for the inside!! I love the way it looks. I do wish it was just a bit more purpley. I’ll have to work on that next time, or maybe just buy purple food coloring.
I thought this next little trick was kinda neat. I’ve seen a few other bloggers do this. Some even as far as to make a permanent cake stand. Mine was just a quick lil prop!
I took an old ugly gold candle holder and painted it white.
Then just layered the plate onto! VIOLA cake stand!!

I can so I have never decorated a cake that looked as cute as yours. Great job and I will have to think about making one. Ty for sharing.
Love your cake! And the decorations are cute too! Happy Birthday to your mom!
I think it looks gorgeous!! And what matters is that mom loved it!!!
You know, Kayli and I made a flag cake one time… We learned if you want EXACT colors you've got to invest in the more expensive food coloring. Otherwise it just looks pastel. The roses look lovely! You can't even tell until you point out the errors.
Beautiful cake!
Yummy, now I'm craving cake, lol,Like what you used for a stand, and the decorations are very nice!!!Paula
Beautiful job!!
Dude I am super impressed! The roses look beautiful!! And I never would have known they weren't perfect. I wish I had a piece now to go with my girl scout cookies.
Very nice! I've been dying to try that cake myself but never have the courage yet.
Thanks for this tutorial, and I appreciate the honesty about the frosting melting a bit. You can't tell at all from the other pictures. It's a great design.
Great job, I did a pink version for my daughters birthday party, it certainly has the wow factor!

Your cake looks incredible! Someday I'll get up the courage (and energy) to make an ombre cake like this. And I adore the little birthday banners you made. Gorgeous!
